The Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo was the most awaited hotel in Panama City’s historic quarter. Remodeling this massive building was no easy task. With such a high cost, many obstacles had to be overcome along the construction. This hotel in Casco Viejo finally opened its doors in January 2023, taking advantage of the high season. The first time I went was for a drink and dessert with my sister after seeing a play in the National Theatre.
I contacted them to do a site inspection of the property since I have my travel agency. One of the managers took me around the building, which was only partially open at the time. With 159 rooms, it is probably the biggest hotel in Casco Viejo, along with La Compañia Hotel.
Luxury with a French Flair
Sofitel Legend are iconic hotel properties where “heritage meets modernity”. These hotels are influenced by French luxury for ultimate indulgence. Each hotel has its own set of amenities including signature restaurants, spa, discreet technology, major-domo service, living room with private library and more. There are six Sofitel Legend hotels in the world, including Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo. The other ones are located in Hanoi, Xian, Cartagena, Amsterdam and Aswan.
The French style can also be seen in the staff’s uniform which uses colonial style cream outfits designed by local designer Federico Visuetti. Greeters, who will say “bonjour”, also wear the traditional Panama hats. Former Union Club
A group of Panamanians who gathered to drink coffee at the business of Don Esteban Duran (there is a Duran coffee store in Casco Viejo) decided they wanted to open a club for themselves and their families. At the time there was only a gentlemen’s club, but they wanted a place where they could take their wives and daughters.
The first location of the Union Club was in a house which is currently used by the Presidential Palace of Panama. There were about 125 members. Then they moved to the current location of the Sofitel Legend on November 3, 1917. This Panamanian country club celebrates many activities including a Christmas Party, Grand Balls, Carnavalitos, Debutants, and more.
Legendary guests visited the former Union Club building including Charles Lindbergh (1928), Albert Einstein (1930) and Queen Elizabeth II (1953), on her first international trip as a monarch.
The Union Club was moved to the Paitilla neighborhood and the former building was used as the Club de Clases y Tropas, which would pretty much be a “country club” for the military during the dictatorship era. It was one of General Noriega’s favorite hangouts. This building was bombed in 1989 during the American invasion of Panama.
Before it became the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, the building was used in the James Bond movie “Quantum of Solace” with Daniel Craig and the “Tailor of Panama” with Pierce Brosnan.
Rooms and Suites
There are 159 rooms and suites at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo. In total there are 17 room categories, ideal to accommodate the needs of any client. Rooms are cozy with elegant furniture and avant-garde design. Artwork that reflects Panamanian heritage is part of the decoration of each room. Relax in your private space after a long day of exploring Casco Viejo. Each room has gorgeous views of the plaza, Pacific Ocean or the neighborhood. All rooms include Wi-Fi, smart TV, safety deposit box and mini fridge.
Some rooms at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo have balconies or terraces which are ideal to have a morning coffee or an afternoon drink. Bathrooms are quite spacious with bronze and porcelain hardware. Some have stand alone tubs, while others have showers. Rooms also can also include a sitting area with a workstation and four-poster beds.

Caleta Restaurant is the main restaurant at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo. This restaurant is operated by the executive chef Lorenzo Di Gravio who received a Michelin star. The menu combines global cuisine with Panamanian flavors, representing the vibrant cultural crossroads of Panama. Ingredients are fresh, including many seafood options.
Ammi is one of Casco Viejo’s Rooftop Bars with great views of the Pacific Ocean and Panama City’s skyline. As the night falls, live Latin music takes over the place. Try one of the bespoke cocktails of the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo, each one carefully prepared by the mixologist. There is also an open kitchen for those who get hungry. Try a ceviche or one of the signature pizzetas. Arcano is a rum speakeasy which is also located at the rooftop of this boutique hotel. Enter behind a discreet magic door where you will discover a celebration of rum’s rich heritage.
Mayda is the main lobby bar at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo. It has a chic and warm decor overlooking the exterior of the building with ocean views. Guests can have afternoon tea, enjoy sweet and savory treats or some light bites and try a French inspired cocktail. Once you step outside you will reach the pool bar with amazing views. It is located below the plaza terrace, opening in the morning to provide fresh juice and smoothies for those enjoying the pool or working up a sweat in the gym. The kitchen opens midday to provide healthy snacks and exotic bowls.
Vera Café is located to the right of the entrance of this hotel in Casco Viejo. This is where I usually go since it is so close to my airbnb in Casa Maralta. The coffee is delicious and they also have great croissants, empanadas, sandwiches, pastries and ice cream.
Sofitel SPA

The fitness center at the Sofitel Legend Casco Viejo opens 24/7 allowing guests to “power their stays”. This modern urban-style gym has state of the art cardiovascular equipment, trainers and group classes.
Meetings, Events and Weddings
This unique property has been hosting events since 1917. There are several event spaces available. The Carnaval Ballroom is the largest space with capacity for 200 guests. It is located on the main level and has sophisticated marble floors, chandeliers and bespoke woodwork. This area also has a spectacular outdoor terrace with panoramic ocean views.
There are two conference rooms available. The Tonada meeting room can host 60 guests and it is a multipurpose room ideal for a product launch, lunch, board meeting, etc. It can be adjoined with the Murga meeting room that can host up to 20 guests. The Comparsas boardroom has an eight seat table ideal for business meals or board meetings.
