For quite some time, the Association of Neighbors and Friends of Casco Antiguo (AVACA) has been wanting to set up a volunteer program to teach children English. Iva Du, the coordinator of the beautiful community garden (it is open for all so pass by to check it out in Plaza Herrera), had a lot of contact with local children who are in vulnerable situations. They expressed to her their interest to learn English. All parents of the children have given their approval for the classes.
“Let’s Speak English” is the name of the volunteer project which started on Friday, February 3. Some of the neighbors in Casco Viejo are former teachers including Professor J.R. Steele who is an educator, consultant, speaker, and author. As well as Tino Haramis who has many years of teaching experience.
The Casco School, Laura Smith and AVACA contributed by donating materials needed to teach the children of “Let’s Speak English”. Learning English will open many doors and change the future for these kids. The SPI (special presidential police force) was also present to help during the class. Other volunteers include Omer Yahav, Joshua Bowen and Jean Bonneau.
You can also volunteer for “Let’s Speak English” if you can speak English fluently, even better if you have teaching experience but it is not required. AVACA is looking for patient, caring and passionate people who want to contribute in creating a brighter future for the children of Casco Viejo.
Current class schedule is from 11:30 am to 1 pm on Mondays and Fridays, depending on the opening time of public schools. Tourists are also welcome to volunteer by contacting Michael Lin, director of AVACA, at +507 6324-7229 or di******@av***.pa .
