Description
River tubing in the Portobelo National Park in Colón is a half-day or full-day adventure. Your guide is a wildlife photographer, conservationist, and naturalist, so you are in the perfect hands if you want to see some wildlife in the park. This park is quite big, with an area of 35,929 hectares, of which 15,465 are primary forest, which has several rivers and waterfalls. Overnight camping trips in the Portobelo National Park are available, allowing you to get to mountains such as Sierra Llorona or see waterfalls such as Salto de las Ranas or Salto del Mono.
It is possible to see many species of birds, including sunbittern, blue or cayana dacnis, great egret, laughing falcon, plumbeous kite, common black hawk, southern lapwing, long-tailed tyrant, toucan, vermiculated screech owl, and many more. Monkey species include Central American spider monkey, howler monkey, red-crested tamarin monkey, capuchin monkey, and owl monkey (night monkey). Other animals include sloths, kinkajou, jaguarundi, bats, and Mexican mouse opossum and raccoon. Reptiles include many species of lizards, spiders, crocodiles, turtles, snakes, frogs, and insects. It is very likely that you will be able to see creatures that you have never seen before.
You can either do a two-hour hike in the half day or a five- or six-hour hike in the full day, depending on how long you want to walk in the jungle. The Portobelo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It played a fundamental role in history since it was a transit point for the wealth the Spanish conquistadors took from Peru to Spain. The river you will float on a tube is called the Guanche River, which flows from the Sierra Llorona mountain range to the Caribbean Sea. The Guanche River received its name from Canary soldiers, who were known as “guanches,” that participated in the conquistador expeditions.
