Monkey Island and Embera Village is such a great tour to take in your Panama vacation. You will be picked up in the morning to head out to Gamboa, passing by the famous Culebra Cut in the Panama Canal and the Chagres River.
Soberania National Park is one of the best places for bird watching in Panama. Audubon Society’s annual bird count spotted over 500 species in this area in less than 24 hours. This national park is such a great place to view wildlife. It is possible to see sloths, monkeys, coati and many other creatures.
The next stop on the Monkey Island and Embera Village tour is the monkey islands. Aboard a boat to get on the Panama Canal and explore Gatun Lake. Huge ships will pass right next to yours while transiting the Panama Canal. These islands are actually the tops of mountains that existed before the area was flooded to create Lake Gatun. There are three types of monkeys that you can see on the Monkey Island Tour which are the howler monkeys (these are very loud), white faced Capuchin monkey and the Geoffrey’s tamarin monkeys. The last two may jump on the boat in search for food.
An authentic indigenous village is the final stop on the Monkey Island and Embera Village tour. This Embera tribe lives in the Chagres river. Learn about their community, history, music, dance and art. Take a short walk along trails surrounding the community to learn about the native plants and how they use them for medicinal purposes. There is a lunch stop on the way back to the city, however food is not included.
