Description
Panama’s Caribbean coast is simply spectacular. The Caribbean snorkeling adventure takes you to the province of Colon which is an hour’s drive from Panama City. Take a short boat trip once in Portobelo to reach the snorkeling site. Playa Huerta is a private beach with white sand. Spend some time sunbathing and relaxing. The second snorkeling site is La Pareja which is a reef wall. There are so many tropical fish swimming in these calm and transparent Caribbean waters.
The Caribbean snorkeling adventure continues with a visit to the town of Portobelo. Its name literally means beautiful port and it used to serve as a port during the time of the Spanish conquistadors. This port was one of the two routes, along with the Fort of San Lorenzo, used by the Spaniards to send their treasures looted from Peru back to Spain. Needless to say it was always being attacked by privateers and pirates. Both of these fortifications share a UNESCO world heritage designation.
Portobelo town is a sleepy town on the Caribbean Sea with colorful houses. It is known for the Black Christ of Portobelo who is celebrated on October 21 every year. Visit this church and purchase some souvenirs if you’d like. Caribbean snorkeling adventure has a lunch stop here, which is not included. Food is delicious in this area where you can get dishes such as octopus coconut curry, coconut rice, fried plantains, fresh fish, crab and all kinds of seafood. After lunch the tour heads back to Panama City.
