“Mi Casita de Azúcar” translates into My Little Sugar House. This is the former home of my friend Roxana in PH Catedral on Cathedral Plaza or Independence Square. I used to live right next door for about two years from 2008-2010. Back in those days, the neighborhood was quite different, since there was still a lot left to renovate and it was a lot more rough. However, I will always remember fondly my time in this building. Especially when they used to do the Panama Jazz Festival right on the plaza.
This plaza in Casco Viejo is one of the prettiest, as it name suggests, it is right in front Panama’s Metropolitan Cathedral. Also in the plaza are the Panama Canal Museum, the Municipal Palace (inside is the Panama History Museum), the historic Central Hotel Panama and the delicious Rene Cafe Restaurant. The plaza is quite picturesque with a white gazebo in its middle and green areas in all of its corners, with statues of Panama’s founding fathers. It is common to see people selling handicrafts and souvenirs in the plaza. Staying at PH Catedral gives you VIP views of the events which are held in the plaza, such a Christmas carols and other musical concerts.

PH Catedral was one of the first buildings to be restored in Casco Viejo. It is a three story building with stairs. To get to Mi Casita de Azúcar you have to go up one flight of stairs. On the ground floor there used to be the Emerald Museum, then Red Lion. The building has an intercom system. Those who rent a car in Panama can park on the street, if possible, free of charge. There is also a paid parking lot nearby in front of the National Theater of Panama.
